Since 2011 XX has run workshops supporting communities in facing challenges creatively in venues, community centres, universities and festivals across the UK, in Denmark, Greece and Singapore, drawing on techniques such as Theatre of the Oppressed, Theatre Reportage, Psychomagic, Clowning and Nature Connection.
Since 2014 we have been curating monthly happenings in venues and on the street, collaborating with a variety of artists such as Rubyyy Jones, Meth, Pat Cash, Pete the Temp, Rudy Douglas, Muti Musafiri, Paul Frankl, groups including Bacchus London and spaces including Hive Dalston, Royal Vauxhall Tavern and festivals such as Shambala and Secret Garden Party.
Our most successful project is the award-winning repeat sell-out show Sex Workers' Opera. It is made by local Sex Workers and friends, contains stories sent in from over 17 countries, received training from the Royal Opera House and has been featured on/in Classic FM, The Independent, VICE, Resonance FM, London Live (TV) and BBC World Service (Radio).
We have produced 8 shows to date, with queues at the door for returns for our first show at The Courtyard in 2014 and an extra night added due to overwhelming demand at Arcola Theatre in 2015. The cast of 10 and mini-orchestra of 4 also performed at Central School for Speech and Drama for International Women’s Day. We have been invited to perform over 10 short excerpts including at The Lost Lectures to over 700 people and in Athens at Sound Acts festival.
Most recently we have expanded our repertoire with intimate Performance Art pieces cutting back to just Siobhan and Alex. Our first is 11 Minutes of Debt which explores the suffocating effect of debt on one life, offering a vulnerable human microcosm of the economic tide engulfing us all.
XX continues to facilitate monthly happenings for a donation. They are on the first Sunday of the Month at Hive Dalston from 7-10pm for a £donation.
We are always open to collaboration with other artists whether it's creating a performance together, curating a happening, facilitating a workshop or mixing our work with your existing work/space/event, don't hesitate to contact us.
Siobhan Knox – Co-Founder
Since 2009 co-founder of Experimental Experience Siobhan Knox has worked as dance practitioner and choreographer in London/New York working with disadvantaged people to find expression and healing through exercise and body awareness. Her passion & experience is in curating spaces with journeys where everyday audiences can't help but join in with the movement & play, getting lost in the experience before realising they didn't intend to attend 'immersive' theatre.
Alex Etchart – Co-Founder
Since 2012 co-founder Alex Etchart has practiced Theatre Reportage with Teatro di Nascosto across Europe and the Middle East – bringing the voice of actors and non-actors living in regions of conflict to the street and stage. He holds a 2-year certificate in Community Music Workshop Skills from Goldsmiths and works as a freelance community arts facilitator with hard-to-reach young people and running weekly drama workshops with Latin American children through Expresión Inka.
